Laurona’s History

In the beginning was René Barbier. He dreamt a wine region in Priorat and Priorat was created after his dream. Then he followed dreaming and founded LAURONA, the first wine project in Montsant and Montsant wine region was created too.

Montsant lives since then in the aura of this Creation myth and now it’s time for the myth to be retold.

Celler Laurona was the seed, the word, the dream, the experiment from which a whole Denomination of Origin emerged. As if the Sierra del Montsant had been waiting for millennia to find the language in which to understand itself, appeared this unique winery, which – despite the years – continues sowing, continues speaking, continues dreaming, continues experimenting.

About our wine

A simple tasting is enough to glimpse the personality of these wines. But if you aspire to a deep understanding of them your are obliged, first, to go explore Montsant

Furthermore, the New Laurona claims its own space in the context of wine, and does so through a different proposal, which assumes its history, but is not exhausted in it; which incorporates the power of René Barbier’s experience, but also the strength of Fiona Fischer´s youth; which recognizes itself in the intimacy of the terroir but is launched into the infinite cosmopolitanism of the international market.

A simple tasting is enough to glimpse the personality of these wines. But if you aspire to a deep understanding of
them your are obliged, first, to go down the cliffs and dive into the sea of vines of Nautilea, to walk among the old grenaches of La Figuera – in the vineyard of Pythagora -, and to stop for a moment to contemplate the twilight among Laurona’s vines.

And then, to enter the magic of their coupages, where it is possible to raise a white wine with red grapes and to entrust to the Macabeo the last touch of grace to turn it into Laurona Blanc; to submit an old Grenache to a short maceration and invent a rosé mix in the barrel the old native varieties such as the Cariñena or the Grenache so that they yield to the spell of the Cabernet or the Syrah, in a friendly company with which to elaborate wines for ageing.

It is certainly possible to opt for any of the many wine ideas that this region provides; however, few will offer the distributor such extraordinary wealth. Because, no doubt, there are other Montsants, but they are not Laurona.
